People have lived in Alnes from way back yonder
and for centuries they have existed by means of a combination of
fishing and farming. |
 |
The most important element was of course the rich
fishing banks out to sea. |
 |
Up to the late 1920’s Alnes was one of the
largest fishing hamlets on the Sunnmøre coast. In those days
life could be pretty hectic, especially during the cod-season
when crowds of seasonal workers and fishermen descended on us. |
 |
Fishing continued to be the staple industry and
up to the late 70’s the harbour was full of small fishing
vessels
that went out each night to fish. |
 |
In 1852 the locals built their own light house –
three wax-candles in a little hut! |
 |
The national lighthouse authority took over in
1876. In the meantime things have changed. Our lighthouse is now
22,5 m high and was built in 1936. |
 |
Our breakwater that shields us from the ocean was
originally built in 1893 and was extended in the 1950’s to form
the harbour you see today. Notice that the original breakwater
is made of finely hewn stone. |
 |
Fishing today is big-business where large, modern
fishing vessels stay out to sea for prolonged periods and don’t
use the harbour as they used to. |
